Etesian Technologies Co. has been formed to manufacture and market a new (patent pending) wind speed sensor (anemometer) that scavenges energy from the wind it is measuring. This novel anemometer provides its own power from a self-contained generator. It transmits data back to its base station up to 200 feet away, eliminating the need for wires, batteries or photovoltaic panels.
The anemometer is based on a conventional three-cup design. The cups are positioned several inches above the body of the anemometer to minimize the aerodynamic influence of the housing. Internal to the anemometer is a generator design, which has zero drag and no magnetic cogging on the cups. This allows the cups to begin turning at the very low wind speeds, less than 2 mph. Also housed in the body of the generator is state-of-the-art electronic circuitry which calculates the wind velocity based upon the rotational speed of the cups, and wirelessly transmits the information in small packets back to the base station.
