¡¡¡¡San Diego-based Helix Wind is now offering a pair of new small wind turbines that opt for a helical shape rather than a propeller design.
The Helix Wind Savonious 2.0 and Savonious 5.0 have patent-pending designs made of aluminum and steel. The tower-mounted turbines can capture omni-directional air instantly without requiring yaw control. Their helical design would apply in an installation where a wide blade turbine could not be installed, such as an urban setting where available air space is limited, and the helical shape would not be dangerous to birds or bats.
The Savonious 2.0 is a 2 kW system, and its rotor dimensions are 6-feet high by 4-feet in diameter. The Savonious 5.0 is a 5 kW system, and its rotor dimensions are12-feet high by 4-feet in diameter. Both products have operating speeds from 6 mph to 35 mph, and the company states they are designed for almost silent operation at less than 5 decibels above background noise.
